All images and products shown Here, you can see images of the first two desks that we commissioned around September 2004 for our children. We initially talked to four local carpenters to obtain quotes for construction, after which we chose two of them to build two desk sets for us (desk and chair) one in pine and the other in oak. On the left below, is our first pine desk, a basic but ornate sort of design. On the right is the first large oak version which is closer to the design we were looking for. Our six year old daughter, the main inspiration for this project, has the oak desk and our son, three years old at the time and now five, has the pine desk. Below, you can see some more pictures that show early development of legs and the desk proper, including the chair shape and the pencil box. The early oak desk has a slot for a name plate, something that we may still offer on our current range, but some parents have stated that they will pass on their desk purchase to the next child so personalisation will not be required. Right away, it became obvious from our research that people are very specific about their furniture - they like either TURNED or STRAIGHT legs and are very adamant about it. So, we decided to offer this as an option from the start and it has worked well. The initial lid device that controls the lid descent, started as a brass device that did not work well on the first versions. Now we have a fairly good device that works quite well. We have now looked into the latest hydraulic and pneumatic damping devices available for small construction projects and having found such a unit that suits our purposes, we begin trialling such a device very shortly. Price became a real issue for us as the UK is extremely expensive. We quickly went outside the UK to investigate better options and to try to find more competitive prices as well as other wood types. We now deal with two suppliers of our specific designs, one in the Far East and one in mainland Europe, as well as keeping our UK supplier who helped us get to the final design and who can work on any customisation for our customers (we recently built a desk set with 22-inch legs for an unusually tall child). Much of what you see here is the result of significant research among parents and children, as well as refinement of the design by us and suppliers. Our current project, in addition to the damping device research, is to produce an Adult version of the popular Radcliffe desk set. Last week, the first two such desk sets arrived made from solid Beech wood with one being purchased by a customer in the South East. More on this soon.
