Damper Units
The pictures to the right of this page show a RADCLIFFE desk in American White Oak, fitted with a set of HYDRAULIC DAMPING UNITS. Two are fitted for each desk and when they are fitted in this way, they allow a child to raise the desk lid with very little effort. As the lid passes the horizontal, the damper units then take the full strain and slowly raise the lid up to the fully open position - about 60 degrees. To close the lid, the child exerts downward pressure on the lid by pulling on the centre part of the lid to overcome the holding force. As the lid descends past the horizontal again, support pressure is needed only to allow the lid to close. The finger gap, present on all our desk sets, prevents crushing of the fingers if the lid slips from the grasp.
If you have a child who is the correct size and age for this desk, but who is perhaps not quite so physically strong enough to raise a heavy solid Oak, Rubberwood or Beech lid, then these devices are the perfect alternative to our standard stay/slide device. Whilst the damping units do not allow the lid to open right up past the vertical - one of our normal required safety features - the dampers have enough force to indefinitely hold the lid in the upright position, to allow unrestricted access to the desk interior and to prevent the lid falling on the user. These damper units have been in normal use by some of our customers for nearly a year now and they have been found to be very safe and reliable. The manufacturer quotes a failure rate of about 1 in every 300,000.
We are now able to offer these units as an upgrade to our customers existing desk sets or as a standard fitting to a new purchase. So far, these units are available for the full RADCLIFFE and the ROXBURGH range of desk sets.

For customers who require these units as an upgrade to their existing product, we supply these units with full fitting instructions for self-assembly. Costs for sending these units to the customer for self-assembly is £40 including VAT and postage. If the customer requires fitting of the units to their existing product in the home, please call for costs which will depend on where the customer is located. New customers who would like these units fitted as an option before delivery, please advise us when you contact us after you have made your purchase. You will be invoiced separately for this upgrade.
